What RelayVault does

RelayVault monitors whether you check in on a schedule you set. If you stop, it notifies you, then the Recipients you named, and eventually delivers the Messages you stored for them. You control the schedule, the timings and who is contacted.

RelayVault is a service of Hallows Group LLC, 5900 Balcones Drive #31966, Austin, TX 78731, United States. “We” below means that company. Reach us at support@relayvault.app.

What it is not

RelayVault is not an emergency service and does not summon one. Alerting a Recipient is not the same as help arriving. It is also not a legal instrument: a Message delivered here is not a will, and nothing in it is executed or witnessed on your behalf. If you need either of those, arrange them properly and use this alongside.

Not for crisis use

RelayVault is for messages you want delivered when you can no longer send them yourself. It is not for suicide notes, for messages about harming yourself, or for anything meant to cause harm to you or to another person. Do not use it to schedule the aftermath of something you are planning.

This is not a moral judgement and it is not a filter. It is a limit on what the service can do: nobody reads what you store, delivery is triggered by silence rather than by any assessment of you, and the people it alerts may be hours away. A system that waits for you to stop responding cannot help someone who needs help now.

If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, please talk to someone today.

Text messages are optional

Text messages and phone calls are optional and are never required. RelayVault runs on email: you can decline them, or stop them later, and still create an account, use every feature, and be listed as an emergency contact. Agreeing to receive text messages or phone calls is not a condition of creating an account, of using any feature, or of being named as somebody’s emergency contact, and nothing you can do here is withheld from you for declining. Where we ask, the box is unticked, ticking it is a separate act from whatever else the screen is for, and there is always a way to say no that we record.

If you do switch texts on, message frequency varies, message and data rates may apply, and you can reply STOP to any message to stop them or HELP for help. Our text message program page describes what is sent and when.

Who can use it

You must be 18 or older and able to enter a contract. By creating an account you confirm that both are true, that the details you give us are accurate, and that you will keep them accurate.

Delivery is best effort

Notifications and deliveries depend on email, text and phone providers, on the addresses and numbers you entered being correct and verified, and on the service being reachable. We work to make delivery reliable and we show you which Recipients are unverified, but we cannot guarantee that any specific message arrives, or arrives on time.

Your responsibilities

Your content, and the permission you give us

What you store stays yours. To run the service you allow us to hold it, encrypt it, process it and deliver it to the Recipients you named. That permission exists only to do those things, and it ends when you delete the content or your account.

Message content is AES-256 encrypted at rest under a key we hold. It is deliberately not end-to-end encrypted, because delivery happens after you have stopped responding and the server has to be able to decrypt without you. We do not read what you store, we do not sell it, and we do not use it to train anything.

What you must not store or send

Do not put any of the following into a Message, a file or a vault item:

We do not monitor what you store and there is no automated scanning. If something is reported to us, or we become aware of it another way, we may remove it and may close the account. We would rather say plainly that we can do this than imply a review that does not happen.

False triggers

If you miss enough check-ins, the escalation you configured will run. That is the product working as designed, and messages delivered that way cannot be recalled. Choose your timings with that in mind.

Account termination

You can delete your account at any time from Settings, which disarms the switch immediately and erases your data. We may limit the request rate of an account that is placing a disproportionate load on the service; that limiting never applies to checking in.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks the rules above, or that we are required to act on. Because closing an account disarms a switch someone may be relying on, we will tell you first and give you a chance to respond wherever we safely can — the exception is content we must remove immediately.

Liability

The service is provided as is. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for loss arising from a message that was delivered, was not delivered, or was delivered late; from an escalation that ran when you were fine; or from one that did not run when you were not. This includes distress caused by a message arriving, or by the way it arrived.

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. Where a limit is allowed but our exclusion is not, our total liability is capped at the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or 100 US dollars.

If someone sues us because of you

If a claim is brought against us because of what you stored, who you named, or how you used the service, you agree to cover our reasonable costs in dealing with it. This does not apply where the claim is our fault.

Which law applies

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States. Any dispute goes to the courts of Travis County, Texas, and you and we both agree to that. If the law where you live gives you rights you cannot sign away, you keep them.

If part of these terms fails

If any part of this is found unenforceable, the rest still stands, and that part is read as narrowly as it needs to be to work.

Changes

If these terms change in a way that affects how escalation or delivery works, we will tell you at the address on your account before it takes effect.
